MAY KINDNESS DAY
Thursday, May 15th, 2018
Theme: MAY WE CELEBRATE OUR TRUE COLORS!
CLASS DISCUSSION:
Close your eyes and imagine what our world would look like if it was all one color. What color would you choose? How long would it take until you got sick of that one color? Would you miss other colors?
Would a rainbow have the same significance? Just like a rainbow that needs contrasting and differing colors to make it beautiful, we need all different types of people to make our world beautiful. There are differences in our hair color, height, how many kids we have in our families, how we learn, our skin color, religion, interests, talents, etc. Wouldn’t it be boring if we each looked exactly the same? People need “DIVERSITY”, just like a rainbow needs color to make it beautiful.
KINDNESS CHALLENGE:
Make someone feel like they belong today.

HAPPY KINDNESS DAY TOMORROW
Thursday, April 19th, 2018
Theme: We are BLOOMING with KINDNESS
EARTH DAY: Sunday, April 22nd, 2018 SCHOOL OBSERVANCE: April 23, 2018
REMIND YOUR STUDENTS TO WEAR THEIR YELLOW KINDNESS T-SHIRTS TOMORROW
April’s theme is all about understanding the relationship of being kind to ourselves, to others, and to also extend a contribution to our surroundings and Mother Earth. By taking responsibility of our environment, we are showing KINDNESS to the Earth. KINDNESS toward nature is KINDNESS to ourselves and others as we protect the earth.
This is a great time of year where students are taking field trips. Take advantage of having the discussion of noticing the beauty around them and taking care of the environment that they will be visiting. TIP: It’s also a great time to dress your classroom in their Kindness T-Shirts to keep them safe and to keep track of them.
SCHOOL KINDNESS DISCUSSION
Showing kindness to other people is very important, but another part of being kind is also showing kindness
to our surroundings, specifically our earth. Help the kids establish an understanding of their environment and their responsibility for taking care of it. First establish what personal space is. Have the kids stand by their desk/tables and show where their space is. Talk about who should clean it. Ask them what space they share with others. Who cleans that space (restrooms, playgrounds, grocery store, churches, etc.)? Help the children to understand that we all have stewardship over our personal space and places we are responsible for. We all share the same environment and therefore all need to take care of it and keep it clean. Ask the children of ways they think they can help take care of the earth.
• Recycling (the 3 R’s Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, see video below).
• Do not littler and pick it up when you see it
• Walk, bike or bus to work and school
• Turn off lights and electronics when not in use
• Use reusable water bottles and food containers
• Visit local Farmer’s Markets
• Plant trees and plants
• Use reusable shopping bags
• Be kind to animals
We show the earth kindness by doing these things. Explain that we start where we can and we take
excellent care of the spaces that are ours.
Happy #DoTheRight Day
The CKM would like to announce that Mayor Tammy of Meridian, Idaho will be proclaiming a Community Kindness Week for Meridian, in September of 2018!
We are excited for the entire Meridian Community to be celebrating kindness with us.
In the spirit of #DoTheRight Day today, the CKM would like to invite the Community to help sponsor Meridian students and faculty with Kindness T-Shirts. The Kindness T-Shirt will be distributed and worn during the Meridian Community Kindness Week and encouraged to be worn throughout the school year each Thursday. The CKM will provide each school participating with our Annual Kindness/Bullying Prevention School Program this next year.

Community Kindness Movement – 6 Scientific Reason Why Kindness is GOOD FOR YOU!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20r2pTq3Iv8&t=2s
Kindness gives us healthier hearts. Acts of kindness are often accompanied by emotional warmth. Emotional
warmth produces the hormone oxytocin in the brain and throughout the body. Of much recent interest is its significant role
in the cardiovascular system. Oxytocin causes the release of a chemical called nitric oxide in blood vessels, which dilates (expands) the blood vessels. This reduces blood pressure, and therefore oxytocin is known as a “cardio-protective” hormone because it protects the heart (by lowering blood pressure). The key is that acts kindness can produce oxytocin, and therefore kindness can be said to be cardio-protective.
How can kindness improve your health? Volunteering results in more health benefits
than exercising or quitting smoking. “Helping a neighbor, volunteering, or donating goods and services results in a helper’s high.” —Stephen Post, Author,“The Hidden Gifts of Helping”.
People who volunteer live a longer more satisfied life.“People who volunteer tend to
experience fewer aches and pains. Giving help to others protects overall health twice
as much as aspirin protects against heart disease. People 55 and older w ho volunteer
for two or more organizations have an impressive 44% lower likelihood of dying, and
that’s after sifting out every other contributing factor, including physical health, exercise, gender, habits like smoking, marital status and many more. This is a stronger effect than exercising four times a week or going to church.” — Christine
Carter, Author“ Raising Happiness; In Pursuit of Joyful Kids and Happier Parents”.
Here is a fun video collage from January’s Kindness Day. Students made Kindness Posters to hang up in their school for their Kindness Week. The posters act as a visual tool in reminding students to do kind things and to encourage putting smiles on other students faces…:) Great job!
